Mr.
Ling How Doong, 67, is a lawyer. Educated at Anglo-Chinese School and Nan Hwa
High School, he studied in the Middle Temple, London and was called to the
English Bar in 1972. He has been in legal practice since 1972.
Mr. Ling was elected and served as the Member of Parliament from 1991 to 1997
for Bukit Gombak constituency, which is no longer in existent for this general
elections.
He is effectively bilingual. He also speaks Malay, Hokkien and Foochow.
Mr. Ling is married with three sons.
Jurong GRC
Dr.
Chee Soon Juan has a PhD in neuro-psychology. He was a lecturer at the National
University of Singapore (NUS).
Dr. Chee is the Secretary-General of the SDP and also the Director of the Open
Singapore Centre, which he co-founded with Mr. J. B. Jeyaretnam.
At the international level, Dr. Chee is the Chairman of the Alliance for Reform
and Democracy in Asia (ARDA), and a member of the International Board of
Directors of the Forum for Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific (FDL-AP).
He was also awarded a prestigious fellowship at the University of Chicago in
2001, and was appointed Honorary Research Associate at the Monash University in
Melbourne, Australia in 1997.
He is the author of several books including Dare To Change, Singapore My Home
Too, To Be Free, and Your Faith, My Home, Our Future. The last book forms the
basis of SDP’s manifesto for this election.
Dr.
Vincent Yeo Boon Keng, 48, has Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Univ. of
Birmingham, 1983), MBA (Univ. of Aston, 1983), MSc (Univ. of Birmingham, 1980)
and BSc.
Dr. Yeo was one of the top 20 students selected from the Science Faculty for the
first batch of students in the Chemical Engineering Course in the Univ. of
Singapore. In 1980 he was awarded the Hufton Prize from the University of
Birmingham for his Master’s programme and subsequently given the full
scholarship award from Hartwell Atomic Energy Agency, UK.
Dr. Yeo has worked in the government, statutory board, private sector and has
also been an entrepreneur. He has sat on numerous committees in MOE, TDB and
SISIR. He was given the Science Council Research award to work on R&D of
packaging materials. He has contributed much to the industry in providing
assistance and in the development of SMEs.
As a student, Dr. Yeo was the President of the Chemical Sciences Society and had
worked very closely with the USSU on the social aspect of the resettlement of
pig farmers in Ponggol.
Mr.
Gandhi Ambalam, 57, is Singapore Public Service Commission (PSC) scholar. He
studied journalism in England.
He was formally the Chief Editor (News) and Executive Producer, Current Affairs
of the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), the predecessor to Media Corp.
As a top official of SBC, he had, among other things, supervised and edited,
radio and television news bulletins and current affairs programmes such as
Friday Background.
In 1982, Mr. Ambalam left SBC to join the newly started newspaper The Singa-pore
Monitor as its senior journalist.
As a senior writer and executive producer in both the print and electronic
media, he covered regional and international forums and events.
Mr. Ambalam contested as an SDP candidate in the Jalan Besar GRC in the 1997 GE.
He is presently a Research Associate with a local think-tank. A Central
Executive Committee member of SDP, his specialty areas are in the political,
economic, social and cultural aspects of life in Singapore.
Ms.
Chee Siok Chin, 35, holds a B.A. in Education Studies. She hails from Marymount
Convent School and subsequently completed her ‘A’ levels at Catholic Junior
College.
Ms. Chee graduated from the National Institute of Education in 1987 and left the
service in 1999. In the course of her 12-year teaching career, she served as
Head of Department. As a member of the steering committee, Ms. Chee has been
able to set directions, develop staff and plan programmes for the school.
She was the first and only teaching staff in her school to be further promoted
to a Senior Education Officer in 1996.
Ms. Chee has represented the MOE in inter-ministry tennis competitions and ran a
42-kilometre marathon in commemoration of Human Rights Day on 10 December 2000.
She is currently a supervisor at a family service centre.
Mr.
Mohd. Isa completed his secondary education at Kaki Bukit. In 1977 he was
awarded the ‘Best Trainee’ award during his national service.
He worked variously for the past 15 years with the civil service and statutory
boards such as Singapore Airport Terminal Services, Port of Singapore Authority
and Housing Development Board. He now runs his own business.
He was actively involved in local politics since 1979. For the past 20 years he
was actively involved in grassroots and charitable organizations.
Isa is married with 3 children. He is currently a Central Executive Committee
member with the SDP.
Hong Kah GRC
Mr. Wong Hong Toy, 64, is the Assistant Secretary-General of the Singapore
Democratic Party.
A Chinese high school graduate, he can speak English, Mandarin, Malay and
sereval dialects including Hokkien, Cantonese, Khek.
Mr. Wong has been active in Singapore’s opposition politics for almost 40 years.
He joined Workers’ Party in 1963 and was its chairman from 1976 to 1988. He was
the Chinese editor for WP’s newspaper, Hammer.
He joined the SDP in 1988 and was the Community Relations Manager with Bukit
Gombak Town Council from 1991 to 1996. He is now running his own business.
Mr. Wong is married with 6 grown-up children.
Mr. Cheo Chai Chen, 50, graduated with a B.A. in Government and Public
Administration from the Nanyang University.
Mr. Cheo joined the Singapore Democratic Party in 1988.
He was elected as Member of Parliament for Nee Soon Central Constituency in
1991, and served as Chairman of the Nee Soon Central Town Council from 1991 to
1996.
Mr. Cheo, who currently runs a dot-com company, is the vice-chairman of the SDP.
Mr. Lim Tung Hee, 46, studied at Victoria School and was awarded the Outstanding
Service Award for his contributions as a student leader.
His artistic passion and flair led him to pursue a career in the Arts. He was
the Art Director for an international advertising agency as well as consultant
to various fashion and decor magazines. In 1999, he produced, directed and acted
in a movie shot in Taiwan, and which was distributed by Shaw Brothers throughout
Asia.
Reflecting his concern and interest on social and humanity issues, Mr Lim’s
movie scripts consistently question the rationale and wisdom of socio-political
policies.
Mr. Lim is also an entrepreneur where he managed a designing company as well as
a property management firm.
Whether as an artist, entrepreneur, actor, scriptwriter or film director Mr Lim
has always sought ways to make Singapore a better and more caring home for all
Singaporeans.
Mr. Sarry Hassan, 56 years old entrepreneur, holds a Certificate in Education
and is currently the managing director of his own private schools.
Educated at Victoria School, and later at The Teachers Training College, he had
24 years of teaching experience behind him.
He was elected into the management committee of the Singapore Malay Chamber of
Commerce and Industry (1998-2000) is currently involved in charity and
missionary work.
This is the third time he is vying as an opposition candidate.
Lim Boon Heng, 25, is a business graduate in Marketing and Management from
Monash University. He is a member of the prestigious Golden Key National Honours
Society, which recognises academic excellence among graduates and whose
membership is by invitation only. He is currently Project Manager with a
management consultancy firm.
Mr. Lim is the Vice-President of the Young Democrats, the youth wing of the SDP.
Mr. Lim is also a member of Alliance for Reform and Democracy in Asia (ARDA),
and Asian Youth Council of Progressive and Liberal Democrats (AYC-PLD). He has
also attended the annual Young Leaders’ Workshop organized by the Forum of
Democratic Leaders in the Asia Pacific (FDL-AP).
Mr. Lim holds the rank of Lieutenant (NS) and a member of the SAFTI Military
Institute Association.
